Slasher.com – Indie Film Review
Synopsis:
At a time where online dating could prove fatal, Jack and Kristy decide they’re ready meet in person. Aiming for an adventurous first date, they plan a weekend getaway to a cozy cabin deep in the woodlands of rural Missouri. While discovering each other, they soon learn of the terrorizing horrors that the forest, and the family lurking there, has in store for outsiders.
Review Summary:
Slasher.com combines the fears of online dating with classic redneck slashers like Texas Chainsaw Massacre and The Hills Have Eyes. While many of those elements work in the films favor, some just work against it.
The Good:
The Horror Elements: From the first moment you meet the back roads Missouri family you feel nothing but uneasiness. Then as the story continues, you learn just how far the family will go to keep their way of life. This is where the story thrives. The family is creepy, scary, and you just want to get as far away from them as possible.
The Twists and Turns: I really don’t want to give anything away in Slasher.com. So I’ll just say that from the very beginning you feel you have a relative idea as to where the story is going. But then a few minutes in, the direction changes. Then just as you feel comfortable with this direction, another twist hits. Then another and another. Normally this many twists would be to a movies detriment, but somehow Slasher.com handles them perfectly. What’s even better is that of all the twists there was only one that I saw coming. Even then, I had completely forgotten about it when it finally happened.
The Ehh:
The Romance: If I had to split the two main plots of Slasher.com I’d say that 60% of it is a slasher and 40% is a first date, cyber romance. Almost every element of the romance is boring and not worth the time to watch. I understand the intent of getting two people that don’t know each other into a remote location, but the problem was that it took so long to move the story along that it just felt boring. I just wanted the movie to pass by all the romance and get straight to the meat of the story. So I’d say that the second half was much more effective than the first.
Verdict:
Slasher.com is a great horror flick for anyone that loves redneck slashers. However, because of some of the boring romance elements, I think it could have been more effective as a 40 minute short film than a full length movie.
Slasher.com is directed by Chip Gubera and took home awards for Best Feature Film at the Bloody Horror International Film Festival in Ottawa, Best Horror Feature at the Hollywood Boulevard International Film Festival, the Golden Award at the Spotlight Horror Film Awards and Best Screenplay at the Optical Theatre Film Festival in Rome. Jewel Shepard and R.A. Mihailoff were nominated for Best Actress and Best Supporting Actor respectively at the Optical Theatre Film Festival.
