Halloween Party – Indie Film Review
With Halloween right around the corner, I figured I should review some Halloween movies to get into the spirit. So let’s start with a review of indie film Halloween Party.
Synopsis:
Ben and Julie’s annual Halloween party is about to go off the Richter scale, especially when their single, high maintenance girlfriend drags in a homeless guy, thinking he’s a party goer, because she needs an escort. As she spends the night avoiding her ex, and the other undesirable guys in attendance, she interacts with a colorful assortment of party peeps. Between disappearing fortune tellers and over crowded jacuzzis, she questions if real love is even possible. The irony: the only person she’s the least bit attracted to, is the homeless man!
Review Summary:
I really dislike reviews like this. Making a movie is no easy task and can take months if not years to develop, and I truly respect anyone that takes on the task. However, sometimes, no matter how much hard work is put into a movie, it just falls a little short. Well, this fell so far that with every passing minutes I spend watching it I became increasingly angry. I’m sorry to say that Halloween Party is a slow, boring, annoying, and completely pointless movie that nobody should waste their time seeing.
The Good:
You can probably tell from my review summary that I don’t think there is anything good in Halloween Party so we are just going to go to the next section.
The Ehh:
The Concept – I struggled a long time to find anything redeemable in Halloween Party. The only thing that I came up with was that I feel the concept is exactly what was intended. Halloween Party follows a group of characters as they mingle with each other. It kind of reminds me of The Office, just a group of people going about their day. Unfortunately, the people we follow are some of the worst.
The Ugh-ly:
Characters – There is not a single redeeming character in Halloween Party. Each one of them is annoying, self-serving, and the utmost scum of the earth. I would hate attending a Halloween party with any of them, so watching them interact for an hour and a half is just as brutal.
Not Funny – For a movie that is billed a comedy, I couldn’t find anything funny about Halloween Party. I feel we are supposed to find the characters funny, but as I said, I personally did not. So rather than finding it funny, I found it overly annoying.
Camera Style – The first thing you learn is that the party hosts set up cameras throughout their house to catch the hijinks of their party guests. While we occasionally and randomly see the footage from these cameras, most of the movie is filmed with a traditional style of filmmaking. The cameras are very used for any plot device or story twist. They are just never really discussed again. Why go through the trouble of doing both styles without a point?
Pointless Story – Speaking of not having a point, I couldn’t find one in Halloween Party. The storyline that gets the most attention is that of Erin and the Homeless Guy, Mason. But even then only about 20 minutes of the runtime are devoted to that story. Most of the time is devoted to random conversations, people drinking, trying to get laid, and a random gypsy.
Verdict:
I can’t stress enough how much I didn’t enjoy Halloween Party. So I can’t directly recommend it to anybody. On top of that it is not only the worst movie I’ve seen this year, but one of the worst I’ve ever seen. So while I respect everyone involved in making Halloween Party, I have no choice but to give it a very low grade.

The characters and humor simply isn’t my style, but they could be yours. So if you want to give it a shot, then by all means go ahead. Halloween Party is available on iTunes, Amazon, and Google Play.
