Winning Poster Design Unveiled at Kick-off Event for Arlington International Film Festival

The Arlington International Film Festival (AIFF) selected the artwork of Tyler Wood, a senior in the Design & Digital Media Department at Mount Ida College as this year’s winner of the AIFF Poster Contest Competition. Tyler’s poster submission was unveiled at a reception on April 21 as he was presented a check for $500, thanks to the generosity of award sponsor Watertown Savings Bank.
“The winning poster this year displayed attention to detail, and a thoughtfully chosen palette that conveys a modern, yet earthy tone. The text employs appropriate visual hierarchy and legibility to communicate important event details. This satisfies the most important goal of the project, i.e. the viewer doesn’t have to hunt around to figure out (a) what this poster is about and (b) how to participate. In addition, the main graphic invites the viewer to explore, with its rhythmic shapes and lines. The composition of the entire layout is balanced and implies movement.”
Design and diversity have been the winning combination of the partnership between AIFF and the Mount Ida College. The mission of AIFF is to foster appreciation for different cultures by exploring the lives of people around the globe through independent film. Yet, AIFF has been more than a film festival from its very inception in 2010. It has been a celebration of the arts with the Poster Contest being its first project to spin-off connecting film with the arts. Mount Ida College shares this mission having one of the most diverse campuses in the greater Boston area providing opportunities to many first-generation students.
This year AIFF invited the students from Mount Ida College exclusively to participate in the poster competition. “We recognize all the students who submitted designs and we honor their work. They are: Alexandra Battaglia, Noel Campbell, Anthony Ricketts, Damian Santamaria, Troy Wade, and Tyler Wood. Thanks to Alison Poor-Donahue, Chair of the Design & Digital Media Department for her enthusiasm about this project and her support of the partnership. Also a special thanks to Fran Berger, Associate Vice President of Marketing & Communications for Mount Ida College for her efforts in promoting the competition and the reception,” says Festival founder Alberto Guzman.
The poster submissions were evaluated by a panel of judges with expertise in composition, design, public relations and marketing and evaluated based on visual appeal, content and marketability. The selected poster design will appear around the world in various forms; i.e. print, TV, and web promotions. “We would like to recognize our esteemed panel of judges and thank them for their commitment to AIFF and the encouragement they give to our future young artists.” They are:
Jennifer Cheng DesAutels, Illustrator, logo designer and plein air artist
Marc Gurton, Owner of 13FOREST Gallery in East Arlington, a contemporary art and craft gallery
Stephen Jurgensmeyer, Professor of Strategic Branding & Idenity Systems and Advanced Typography
Jeannet Leendertse, Owner of jldesign and mooizeg.jkdesign providing services to the publishing industry and those who look to publish independently

The Awards Reception held at the Arlington Center for the Arts (ACA) was a celebration of the arts. Slow Boat Home entertained the guests with their exquisite brand of music while Ciders of Spain and numerous Arlington restaurants catered the event.
The evening was the official launch of the 2016 Arlington International Film Festival that will be held at the Capitol Theater October 27-30.
The poster submissions will be on display in the Gibbs Gallery at the ACA through the end of this week.
Arlington International Film Festival congratulates this year’s winner of the AIFF Poster Contest, Tyler Wood and thank all the graphic design students from Mount Ida College on their submission.
