Why you should be watching New Penny Dreadful
Vanessa Ives, the once proud hunter of things that go bump in the night is now reduced to a ghostly figure. All her trusted allies are long gone, leaving her to wallow away in dust and decay. Welcome to Season 3 of the Victorian Horror series Penny Dreadful, much has changed since we first met Vanessa Ives in the pilot episode of Season 1 which first aired on April 28, 2014 but the most important thing remains, Penny Dreadful is a mesmerising masterpiece of writing, production and all the best elements of a historical-fantasy drama.
It’s no stretch to see why Eva Green was nominated in 2015 for a Golden Globe for her work in the SHOWTIME series. Her characterisation of Miss Ives, a woman who’s gift of the occult and tendency to attract all manner of demonic creatures keep her constantly in perilous danger, is a performance beyond mesmerising. The remaining Penny Dreadful characters draw from infamous literary figures of the horror genre such as Dr. Victor Frankenstein and his monster, Dorian Grey and more recently Dracula, all woven to create a complex mythology. A terrifying clash of good and evil in all it’s ghoulish and often even beautiful forms.
With it’s universe having now expanded from beyond the horse-drawn carriages of London to the Wild West of America in this latest season, Penny Dreadful continues to reinvent itself. Not afraid of a little (or at times a lot) of bloodshed, violence and nudity, this is a progressive drama that continues to impress.
