Watch some of the ESFF’s staff favourite shorts!

A little while back we published a blog article on some of our favourite films from the last few years. One of our readers got in touch and asked for online links to the films. This was an excellent idea which in our hurry to publish the article we omitted to add to the article and so we’ve addressed that in this post.

Although most films we screen are not all available online, one or two of the films in our top 10 list are available publicly as a few years have passed, while a number of other film-makers have uploaded trailers for these films. So, for those of you who would like to see something of these films, we’ve collected the links for you here, hope you like them!

Dark Net by Adam Woodhall

Roger’s journey hasn’t been without its challenges; he underwent a psych assessment and was asked by police to stop his nightly patrols. It’s a lonely life, and all he wants, more than anything, is to find love. He’s for real, he’s got fans, his own radio show, and now he’s starring in a new BBC3 comedy show called BoomTown.

Butterflies by Isobel Peppard

A Wee Night In by Stuart Edwards

Chrissy was a sickly child, so no one expected her to live to a ripe old age. Nevertheless, this Scottish woman is now 95, frail but full of life. From her house in a village near Glasgow, she engages in activities that keep her active and involved with life. Today, Chrissy’s 91-year-old boyfriend Bill is coming over for a nice evening that will pass by according to the slow rhythm of age. They rub shoulders in her cozy little kitchen, enjoy a big meal, watch TV and chat like it’s going out of fashion. These two chatterboxes are – in Chrissy’s own words – “well matched.” Music from their youth is usually playing in the background. This relatively new couple have fun bickering together; old age and the approaching end magnify life’s little pleasures, lending them almost a miraculous sheen. Chrissy talks in voice-over about how they met and proudly says that she has never been one to rush into romantic entanglements. Bill spent two years calling her, asking if she would like to go out with him. She always liked to take her time, and still does. This is an intimate, heartwarming portrait of love in old age, full of recognisable, comedic moments.

90 Grad Nord by Detsky Graffam

It’s a fact: good Germans wait at red traffic lights. But what do you do when the green man simply won’t appear? In the fantastical black comedy 90 Grad Nord (90 Degrees North) Karl, a stressed businessman, is trapped by an evil traffic island – a bitter fight for survival follows.

The Misbehaviour of Polly Paper Cut by Bryan Ferguson

Polly’s delusions of grandeur are causing her comic book obsessed mind to take a step in the wrong direction. What was once a bored Spanish girl lost in comics is now a masked sociopath with a thirst for mischief. Submerging herself into a misbelieved hyperreality, Polly “wreaks havoc” upon her boring Floridian town as her alter-ego, “Polly Paper Cut”.

Love Cake by Eleanor Yule

Violet wants magic but she’s too scared to take a chance. She can’t even bring herself to swap her dull, plain scone for something more indulgent. Until a gift that’s altogether too delicious to resist is left on her doorstep, prompting her to embark on a mission into unexpected temptation.

Contrapelo by Gareth Dunnet-Alcocer

As he faces the man who is destroying his country, he is confronted by a difficult decision: to become a killer, or to let this man continue to kill.
