Top 5 Disappointing Horror Movies Of 2016
5. The Forest
To start out this list is called The Forest. It’s about Aokigahara Forest which is near Mount Fuji in Japan. This forest is a known destination for people who are suicidal and want to kill themselves. An american girl, Sarah Price, is called by the police from Japan, they inform her that her twin sister Jess is dead. The movie then flashes to Jess walking into the forest, Sarah feels this is not true and her twin is still alive. She takes the trip to Japan to solve this mystery of her sister’s so-called suicide. Now this movie bored me to death, I think I fell asleep twice. It does what a lot of recent horror movies have done, show an awesome trailer and then the movie is seriously disappointing. This is just drawn out and when the big reveal comes, I felt I was just done with this film.
4. The Darkness
This is one of the new movies brought out by the guys at Blumhouse Productions, the same guys that brought out Paranormal Activity, Sinister, The Visit & Insidious. This movie is based on real events. A family who visits the Grand Canyon and brings home a supernatural entity, an entity that lives off fears and then takes over their lives. It stars Kevin Bacon, Radha Mitchell, Matt Walsh & Jennifer Morrison. Now I like a lot of movies Blumhouse Productions releases, but this one is just way to generic and boring to me. It screams Kevin Bacon and Jennifer Morrison did this for a paycheck. Again, the trailer and the director were the two main reason s I was interested in this. The director is Greg McLean, he directed three of my favorite horror movies. He directed Wolf Creek 1 & 2, and Rogue, which is about a killer crocodile. After seeing this I felt that it was generic, slow and just not a good film whatsoever.
3. Cabin Fever
This film right here is the remake to the classic Eli Roth film of the same name. When I think remake I think you gotta do something different, something that makes your version stand out. The premise to this, like the original, is a bunch of kids who go to a cabin they rented for the weekend. They plan on partying and having lots of sex while relaxing. Well the kids contact a flesh-eating virus and all hell breaks loose, what we get are gory shots of violence and mayhem, it’s awesome. Like I said above, a remake should be a vision that is different to the original so it stands out. What we got literally was a shot for shot remake, they copied everything from the original. Even little things that the original did they copied, for example the hyper kid at the general store saying pancakes, they copied from the original. Some scenes they copied from the original and just visual improvements (even though I think Eli Roth’s film is superior). There was no reason for this film to be remade. All they did was copy everything Eli Roth did and called it their own. I was hoping for a different idea spawned off what Roth did, but what I got was the same film with some roles reversed. This can be skipped as a horror film in my opinion.
2. 31
I did a review for 31 a little while ago. I really enjoyed this film but was still disappointed and I’ll explain. First let me say disappointing doesn’t mean I hated the film, just that I hoped it would have been better than what it was. I saw this film when Fathom Events were doing their screening for Rob Zombie’s movie. Saying this movie was hyped would be an understatement. People were saying this was the next House of a 1,000 Corpses (one of my favorite horror movies by the way), seeing what he did with Lords Of Salem, I was hooked from that statement. After seeing this, I was highly entertained but wanted more. The movie was your normal Rob Zombie movie. People being chased and mutilated by crazy psychopaths who are dark characters. After Lords I thought he was gonna continue on with weird and original movies. This movie looked like his first film. A lot of footage was cut from the film that Rob says he’s adding back in for the Blu-ray. Maybe that will make the film better in my eyes, but after seeing this I thought “Well it was a rob zombie movie.” I enjoyed it but wanted more creatively from Rob after how much I loved Lords.
1. The Blair Witch
This should be no surprise, If you read my review for The Blair Witch Project then you know I hated that film. The only reason why I gave this movie a shot and had any interest in it was because of the director. The director of this is Adam Wingard, who I think is one of the best new horror directors of this generation. He made two of the best thriller/horror movies that I can watch over and over and not get sick of, You’re Next and The Guest, they are both amazing. When I heard he was doing Blair Witch I said “OK, I’m interested!” What he did with it was disappointing… To me at least. Two thirds of this movie is The Blair Witch Project all over again. You don’t need to see that movie to understand this one. They explain the first movie in five minutes to catch you up. All that’s new is the new equipment they have in here like drones. The last third of the movie is downright amazing and scary but I wanted the whole movie to be like that. If this was the first installment of The Blair Witch I would be like “OK lets see where they go with this now“. This is the third movie in the series and I think it’s time to end it. I think Blair Witch is officially dead now. Not a lot of people cared to see this in theaters and when you see it, you’ll understand why.
That is my top 5 disappointing horror films of 2016, all films are subjective and maybe you liked these films more than I did.
