The Nudels of Nudeland (2022) Film Review
Where to begin?
It’s actually hard to describe the experience that is The Nudels of Nudeland. It shouldn’t be since it’s basically an emotionally shallow story set in a comedic backdrop, a trait it shares with many comedy films. But this isn’t like anything you’ve ever seen. It’s not that it’s raunchy. It’s so self-aware of its essence that at some point it plays like a documentary, or a commercial, about the place that’s ultimately ideal for its characters. In The Nudels of Nudeland those that wear clothes are the subject of a joke. And those that don’t are simply… normal.
If you’re offended by naked bodies, then… Go! Now before it’s too late.
The Nudels of Nudeland is a series of funny vignettes that portray a journey. One that’s hard to shape in another way that’s not “nudity is happiness”. It carries a sense of humor that’s sharly aimed at those who, for some reason, understand a way of life that’s quite particular.
It’s also far from being explored in the film. The Nudels of Nudeland seeks no reason beyond its basic, slapstick premise. If you’re cool with that, then come along. If you’re not, then it’s OK. What Tim Chizmar does is undeniably bold, but at least he’s not going for indoctrination of his idea. This is far less serious.
Sure, The Nudels of Nudeland could use some improvements and edits. Chizmar doesn’t even mind a few mistakes in some lines and just goes along with the idea that the film’s authentic. As I thought about it, I turned the page and followed Chizmar’s intentions to tell two stories that didn’t need to be told, but that speak a lot about ourselves: anxiety-ridden people who only feel comfortable when being naked.
When they’re transported to Nudeland, they find happiness. Sort of. This paradise has all sorts of characters that perform in a weird setting that doesn’t do much for the story. But at least they’re being themselves. Writer/director Chizmar isn’t determined to make them believable or even likable. They’re just projections of something that’s out of this world. And always wearing their birthday suit.
This is the example of a good idea that has to be reworked to serve its final purpose. There are some nice shots, and even likable characters with an interesting backstory. And then it’s a jumble of bad costumes, inexplicable characters, and lousy acting. If you can take that, then welcome to Nudeland. Let us know how it goes.
