The Night is Calling – Short Movie Review
What’s it All About
The Night is Calling – Alexandre and his partner Sergio are on their way to pull off a heist. When they get to their destination, Sergio is disappointed that it is a simple wool shop, and expresses his disdain, telling Alexandre that this better be worth it. While the two are shuffling through the shop, looking for valuables, they hear Luis, the shop owner, and take him into custody. Sergio is about to leave the premises when he learns there is nothing to be had from the heist, but he discovers that it had been planned this way, and that the hostage was someone from Alexandre’s past who was about to be dealt a dose of bad karma.
My Opinion
This was a high-intensity drama, with the trappings of an individual that was supposed to have been a father figure, but who was instead a complete monster. Seemingly a humble wool shop owner by day, and terrorizing innocent children by night, Luis claimed to have been a changed man when he was met face to face by his grown foster son. Thankfully, the movie left to the imagination that revenge which was exacted upon him by the now grown youth that had been the object of his abuse, along with his sister whom Luis purportedly extinguished through his dastardly acts. The short was angry and dark, but it fit with the historical events that had gone on for years that led up to climactic occasion of facing one’s abuser.
The Verdict
Although unsettling, the sequence of events in The Night is Calling was meant to be a closure of sorts for the lead character’s experience as a child suffering untold abuse that scarred him for life. Props to the producer for portraying accurately the whirlwind of emotions that a child would be facing on a daily basis, never being released for processing until reaching adulthood.
