Suicide Squad or Firing Squad: A Review
Suicide Squad! A few weeks ago, I got around to watching the newest DCEU movie starring Margot Robbie, Will Smith, Violet Davis, Jai Courtney. Be sure to watch the entire review in the VLOG review I posted. But here are some of my thoughts about the movie.
Suicide Squad Main Plot of Doom
As the title suggests, we are introduced to a new group of heroes in the DCEU: Deadshot (Will Smith), Harley Quinn (Margot Robie), Captain Boomerang (Jai Courtney), Diablo (Jay Hernandez), and Killer Croc (Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje). The rest of the team is rounded out with Slipnot and Katana. All lead by Rick Flag (Joel Kinnaman). The idea behind the team was created by Amanda Waller (the ever intense Violet Davis). Her idea centered around the “what if…” the next alien that arrives on our planet is not as friendly as Superman. The world will need to defeat this villain with some controllable psycho villains. The worst of the worst. She sets forth and captures (with the help of Batman) some the criminals. They basically have to do what she says or the explosive device in their necks will explode. Yes, they do go and fight a bad guy.
The Acting of Suicide Squad
The front runners of the team are Harley Quinn and Deadshot. Margot Robbie must have studied the comics and the Batman animated series because she nailed the voice and craziness. Her acting stands our more than her little cheeks that peer from beneath her short shorts. Will Smith does an admirable job of playing the master assassin Deadshot. He does bring his usual bravado to the role. Although, I found it a little too similar to the character he played in I, Robot. From there, the acting becomes very one dimensional. Jai Courtney as Captain Boomerang has a few sparks of humor, but we never get to the punchline. He was a character I wanted to see more of in the movie. Hernandez and Akinnuoye-Agbaje are pretty much there for spectacle. Killer Croc is very imposing and Diablo has two major scenes. I just wish we had time to visit more of these characters in the movie.
Suicide Squad Overall
To quote Rick Flag when we are introduced to Captain Boomerang being dragged into the scene inside of a sack: “What do we have here? 12 pounds of shit in a 10 pound bag.” This line pretty sums what I felt was the issue with the movie. They tried to do too much in too little time. Characters were rushed. The editing had some issues. And the plot hurried through like a sputtering Winnebago on a dirt path. There are some great moments. Even Jared Leto as the Joker was an interesting twist on the character we know from previous DC films. I will wait to see more of his acting and portrayal of the Clown Prince to make any judgement.
