SKY’S THE LIMIT (2013)

Sky's the Limit short film review

Jason, a recently widowed father tries to re-connect with the world after his wife’s passing, by entering the internet dating scene, all the while neglecting his young son Frankie, who tries to engage his father in games, hoping to bring out of a playful side that he thinks has been missing in him for so long. When those efforts come up short, Frankie has no choice but to retreat further into his imagination, into the adventurous world of the Sky King.

This is the focus of writer / director April Schroer’s promising, but far too short Sky’s the Limit. At only seven minutes, Schroer’s film only scratches the surface about how we cope with loss and how we communicate in the wake of tragedy.

The film is nice to look at (kudos to director of photography Tom Mika) and we do see brief glimpses of recognition that things are not as they should be on the face of leading actor Timothy J. Cox, endearing as Jason, but Schroer’s script needed to raise the stakes and give Mr. Cox and young actor Joseph Di Stefano, pleasant as Frankie, more to do. A more detailed focus on how Jason and Frankie deal separately and with each other would have been preferred to the lengthly and sloppy Sky King sequence in the middle of the film.

Overall, Sky’s the Limit, is a well intentioned, freshman effort on the part of Schroer.
