Rings Summary & Review
I have been a big fan of The Ring franchise ever since I saw the first one a few years ago. The first film was absolutely terrifying, and still scares me as an adult. Samara is one of the scariest movie ghosts I’ve seen. While The Ring Two wasn’t as good as the first, it was still entertaining. Now, after years of anticipation, the third film has finally been released, titled Rings (sharing the name with a short film connected to the second film).
Taking place 13 years after the first film, Rings follows Julia (Matilda Lutz), a young girl who’s boyfriend, Holt (Alex Roe), becomes a part of a secret society devoted to testing the boundaries of Samara Morgan’s cursed video. When Julia decides to receive the curse to save him, she discovers something different about her video. Holt and his college professor, Gabriel (Johnny Galecki), discover new images that suggest not all of Samara’s tortured past has been discovered. It’s up to Julia and Holt to discover the truth before her time is up.
This movie was way better than critics are saying. I found it to be a very entertaining horror movie, just like the first two. It’s not as terrifying as the first one, but it does have its effectively scary moments, and story-wise it was better than the second one. I won’t spoil the ending, but I did find it to be very intense.
Of course, this film did have its problems. I didn’t think they needed to have as many horror tropes as they did. It made the film seem very unoriginal. I also thought we would see more of the secret society surrounding the video. I really wanted to see the inner workings of the people who risk their lives trying to see what will happen when they watch it. However, all of these are just minor issues. I really did enjoy the movie overall.
Rings was a great entry into The Ring series. It wasn’t as good as the first one, but it was better than the second one. While it wasn’t as great as I was hoping, I’m glad this movie wasn’t a total disappointment, and it is way better than what people are saying. I can’t wait to see what happens to the franchise in the future.
