Resident Evil: The Final Chapter Summary & Review
Everyone has a guilty pleasure movie, something that isn’t well made, but you still can’t help enjoying. For me, it is the Resident Evil franchise, based on the video games by Capcom Studios. I am not a fan of the video game series, but I love all the movies. No, they are not very well made, but they are undeniably fun to watch. Now the series has come to an end with Resident Evil: The Final Chapter, a movie I have been waiting almost five years for.
The sixth and final film in the series follows Alice (Milla Jovovich), who finds herself, yet again, betrayed by Umbrella Corporation chairman Albert Wesker (Shawn Roberts). She is then contacted by Umbrella’s super-computer, The Red Queen (Ever Gabo Anderson), who states that the corporation has created an airborne anti-virus, capable of killing every T-Virus infected organism on the planet. With only 48 hours left until the human race is fully consumed by the virus, Alice must return to The Hive, the underground laboratory in Raccoon City where the apocalypse began, while fighting off Wesker and another old enemy, Umbrella co-president Dr. Alexander Issacs.
Like all the other films in the series, this movie was fun, mindless action. None of it was really well made, but it was, no doubt, fun to watch. I also enjoyed Milla Jovovich’s performance. I thought she was great for the role of Alice throughout the entire franchise. She knew when to be serious, and when to tell a joke every once in a while.
However, there were two things I did not like about this movie. The first was the shooting style. The previous five films all had a steady-cam style, but this one went handheld. This style made some of the action scenes very hard to watch. The second, and I don’t know if it was the movie or the theater I saw it in, was that the movie was really, really loud. Every time there was a jump-scare, it sounded like an explosion going off right next to my ear, which got annoying very quickly.
While this wasn’t the best of the Resident Evil films, I still really enjoyed it, and I thought it was a great end to the franchise. I didn’t think the cinematography was all that great, but other than that, it was another movie that I just had a lot of fun with. I’m sad to say farewell to my favorite guilty pleasure series, and can’t wait to add this film to my DVD collection.
