Passengers Summary & Review

When I made my predictions at the start of the year for what would be the best movies of 2016, one of the movies on the list was Passengers. I didn’t really know much about it, and hadn’t seen anything for it. I just thought, from the cast and the basic plot, that it would be a great movie. So, did it live up to my hype?
Passengers takes place in a far off future where a corporation has started sending volunteers to distant, habitable planets in other galaxies. When one such ship, known as the Avalon, suffers a malfunction, two passengers named Jim Preston (Chris Pratt) and Aurora Lane (Jennifer Lawrence) are woken up from their 120-year hibernation ninety years too soon. Though depressed at the realization that they will die before the Avalon reaches the new planet, they soon realize their hibernation pods weren’t the only thing that broke.
I have been saying that this would be the last great movie of the year, and I was right. Passengers is a great movie. The story was original and inventive. The performances from Pratt and Lawrence were great. The visuals, costumes, and sets were beautiful. Basically, everything about this movie was great. There were a few plot holes here and there, but everything else about the movie made up for that.
The thing that I liked the most about the movie was the setting. I loved the look and design of the Avalon. It really looked like a place I would want to spend time on. I also loved the images they showed of the new planet the ship was heading for. It looked like a beautiful, untouched planet that I would love to visit. They designed locations beautiful enough that I would like to live in, and that’s one thing that makes the movie great.
In the end, Passengers is far better than critics are saying. I understand the parts that people might have problems with but all those points are resolved in the movie. The fact that they can’t look past them is their own problem. For me, this movie is an easy choice for one of my top 10 favorite movies of the year, so expect to see it on my end of the year review.
