No Matter Who the Doctor Chooses, Someone Save Us
There’s big news in the universe, from Cardiff to Gallifrey. Mr. Who’s getting a new sidekick. Apparently the arrival of the Doc’s new companion is so huge, it’s being announced at halftime of a Soccer– uh, Football Match. According to a story from techtimes ,
“The BBC plans on announcing who the actor behind that someone is on Saturday, April 23. The network has the announcement timed to begin during half-time of its Match of the Day Live event.”
I’m as excited as a hooligan turned Whovian. The only person in my immediate circle who outranks my knowledge of Doctor Who is my 12 year old son, and after that, I have to get on fan sites for anything resembling cognitive discussion. I’ve got BBC America street cred, son. Here’s where the pisser comes in. I’ve been disappointed the last two seasons, and I’m worried about my future with the show. Peter Capaldi has added all of the fun of an IRS tax audit to the role of The Doctor, and erased the quirky genius that Matt Smith and David Tennant so carefully penciled. Bloody hell, I think even Chris Eccleston was funnier than Pete. My ray of sunshine? Jenna Louise-Coleman is officially gone, because I never liked her one bit. You can’t follow Amy Pond and Rose with the kind of spoiled school girl snarkiness that Coleman brought every episode. Rude, conceited, and one dimensional, without a hair out of place, or a shred of real vulnerability, Jenna attempted to convince us that she belonged in the TARDIS, when I thought she was an abandoned Kardashian.
On a sadder note, Steven Moffat, brilliant head writer for the show is moving on, and taking with him the mind that has brought us the woven tapestry since the tenth doctor. I’ll miss him, but I think the departure of Coleman and Moffat, the assumption that Capaldi will leave after this year, and the grandiose nature of the announcement event reveals my quandry, and one shared by the network. Who can Save Who? I don’t hate Peter Capaldi as much as I did Clara Oswald, and I think he needs to open up to reach his potential, but I’m praying to the Time Lords that whomsoever is chosen at halftime tomorrow can be our savior. I’m worried the TARDIS is dying…..
