Mob Land (2023) Film Review
The character-driven heist thriller Mob Land is a pleasant surprise in the form of an indie film that succeeds every expectation. I found myself unable to escape its grip of a Southern setting where secrets are far too heavy to hide, and justice is obligatory but not traditionally delivered. It’s a film that never elevates itself towards a friendly conclusion that will make sigh in relief because good guys win and bad guys lose. No, in the small town that is Dixie happiness is a mere theory.
Here’s a film led by actors that would be deemed secondary in today’s industry, and featuring a storyline that doesn’t exactly provide something new and it’s not unpredictable. However, it’s a ravaging film that’s restrained by its production value. Nicholas Maggio, the man in charge of the project takes every seat behind the camera and forces himself to stay within the boundaries of a film he feels very comfortable with. In the future, perhaps he will experiment further, but with Mob Land he has to play it safe, and by doing that he accomplished a nifty thriller that’s much better than reviews say.
Shelby Connors is trying to be a good father. His past is shady, but he wants to leave it all behind. His wife Caroline and his daughter Mila are everything he needs to land in the present and forget what he did in the past to survive. Unfortunately, Caroline’s brother Trey has a proposal that sounds too good to be true. He proposes a hit on a pill mill that won’t necessarily make him rich, but will allow him to start again.
Bodie, a local Sheriff, tries to overcome a personal crisis while he tries to keep Dixie crime-free. Nevertheless, after Trey and Shelby’s hit gets out of hand, Bodie has to restore peace in the small town. Clayton arrives in town to make people pay for a heist that scrambled all the numbers for the crime lord he works for. Shelby and his family become a target, and Clayton won’t rest until justice is delivered.
Maggio’s superb work as a director allows him to stay faithful to a concept that, as harrowing as it ends up being, seems inevitable. Shelby has no other way to do but to follow Clayton’s demands and try whatever’s at hand to save Caroline and Mila. He follows orders up to a point, and provides the emotional leverage in the film. But Maggio has other plans and doesn’t go for the ending that cleanses Dixie of all its issues. Instead, he streamlines his film to never solve an issue but simply depict a situation that’s inevitable. In Mob Land, everyone’s falling in the same direction, and the only thing you can do is prevent a lethal fall. But fall you will.
Starring John Travolta in a very secondary role, but Shiloh Fernandez and Stephen Dorff in great performances, the film is easy on the action, and hard on the drama. Dorff and Fernandez are the center of the film, and both their characters progress into a shift that’s impressive from the perspective of the story, but it could be ultimately shocking to audiences. Redemption is possible. But Maggio doesn’t follow the rules of bad guys who seek it. In Mob Land, the atypical happens. Don’t say we didn’t warn you.
