Mediated Visions: Film, Art & Technology
DOXA Documentary Film Festival’s Motion Pictures Film Series, in partnership with New Media Gallery, NewWest FilmFest, Momentum Youth Arts Movement and the City of New Westminster Arts Services is proud to present a unique collaboration entitled Mediated Visions: film, art & technology. Mediated Visions encompasses a convergence of film, contemporary art, workshops and artist talks that address the interconnected nature of human society and technology.
This special event is organized in conjunction with the New Media Gallery exhibition Witness, a collection of five international works that incorporate shifting levels of machine vision and recognition, exploring the fragmented and interconnected nature of the vision process. The works question how our interaction with technology has reconfigured notions of embodiment, public space, and the technologies themselves.
In keeping with the exhibition’s theme, DOXA proudly presents a screening of Werner Herzog’s documentary Lo And Behold: Reveries of the Connected World. Internationally renowned Director Herzog’s new film charts a winding course from the earliest days of what was once quaintly dubbed ‘The world-wide web’ to the more frightening implications of today. Namely, can we exist without the Internet? Would we want to?
The screening of Lo and Behold will be followed by talks from guest speakers Adam Basanta and Mazdak Gharibnavaz. Basanta, one of five artists in the Witness exhibition, is an award-winning Montréal-based sound artist, composer and performer of experimental music. His work spans visual and sound installations, experimental electronic music composition, site-specific interventions and laptop performance. Event partner New West Film Fest presents Mazdak Gharibnavaz, the Grassroots Development Officer at OpenMedia. A fervent believer in the power of the Internet in addressing the upcoming challenges of the 21st century, he initially joined OpenMedia as a volunteer, and shortly after as a staffer in the fight for a free and open Internet.
Mediated Visions programming also includes a free workshop presented by the Momentum Youth Arts Movement (October 18th, 4PM-5:30PM, Anvil Centre). Phoned Footage, led by media artist Louisa Phung, will demonstrate the fundamentals of creating a media-based work using smartphones. Winner of the 2013 Quick Flicks competition, Phung is an independent filmmaker, and Assistant Director with DGC BC.
