Lights Out Summary & Review

Everyone, at some point in their lives, has been afraid of the dark. We all know that it’s a common fear for children. It’s a normal thing to be afraid of. When you can’t see anything, you have no idea what could be in front of you. I know I was scared of the dark, especially after watching horror movies. Now, producer James Wan and new coming director David F. Sandberg have given you a good reason to be afraid of the dark with Lights Out. In this film, Rebecca (Teresa Palmer) is trying to break away from her mother Sophie (Maria Bello), who has suffered from different mental problems her whole life. When Rebecca’s brother, Martin (Gabriel Bateman), starts losing sleep, she realizes that something more terrifying is happening. It turns out that Sophie’s old friend, Diana, is stalking the family as an entity that can only appear when the lights go out. Rebecca now knows that the thing that once haunted her childhood is something much more sinister, and if they don’t find a way to stop it, it will tear their family apart. So, did this horror film make me scared to turn out the lights?

What I liked about it:
– The idea of a demon that only appears when the lights go out is a genius idea. It’s something very original and has a lot of potential.

– It keeps the same atmosphere as the short film it’s based on, while offering just as much dread.

– The performances were very good from the cast. I thought Maria Bello’s spaced out looked was perfect for someone who was being stalked by a ghost.

– I liked how it didn’t have many of the famed “tropes” that most horror movies have. It had a couple, but it knew how to work with them.

– It was very intense. I found myself looking everywhere for the ghost in fear of when she was going to appear.

– It didn’t have a regular, horror movie ending. I don’t want to spoil anything, but it doesn’t end the way you’d think.

What I didn’t like about it:
– While they did explain who Diana was, I would have loved to know more about what she was and why she could only appear in darkness.

Conclusion:

Lights Out is the one of the best, and most original, horror movies I have seen in a long time. It has a great sense of dread that will keep you on the edge of your seat. It also had great scares that kept me jumping. I think almost anything James Wan touches is great, and I think David F. Sandberg has a bright future as one of the next, great horror filmmakers.
