One of the most hated and underrated sequels in the history of movies has to be Halloween 3. When it came out in 1982, people were so excited to have another Halloween film. That was until the world found out there was no Michael Myers in it, then people immediately shunned and hated this movie. Now I am not going to tell you that you should like this film, I am here to tell you why I like this film and why I believe people should give it another shot.
Now after Halloween II, Michael Myers was dead.. He was burned alive by Doctor Loomis, while Laurie Strode survived the hellish night. John Carpenter has gone on record saying this movie was supposed to be a new tradition, every year a new story set up about Halloween. Well, people hated the fact there was no Michael Myers and it bombed in theaters. Halloween 3 has a great cast of characters, with people like Tom Atkins (Night of The Creeps, The Fog, Creepshow), Dan O’Herlihy(The Last Starfighter, Robocop), cameo voice overs by Jamie Lee Curtis, director Tommy Lee Wallace and even stuntman Dick Warlock. The story is downright fascinating as well, dealing with witchcraft, the over commercialization of Halloween & showing you what Halloween was really about.
The movie starts off with shop owner Harry Grimbridge running for his life, he is being chased by strange men in suits. Grimbridge is running with a Silver Shamrock Jack O’ Lantern mask in his hand and is scared to death. Grimbridge escapes the chase and collapses at an old run down gas station. The gas station worker Walter Jones finds Grimbridge and he repeats “They are gonna kill us”, “They are gonna kill us all”, before going unconscious. Walter rushes Grimbridge to the hospital because he is in real bad shape. That night at the hospital Grimbridge is being taken care of by Doctor Dan Challis (Tom Atkins). After giving Grimbridge some pain medicine to help him, another strange man in a suit sneaks in and kills Grimbridge. The strange man then goes into his car and he blows himself up. The next day Grimbridge’s daughter Ellie talks Dr Challis into looking into and finding out who and why her father was killed. The investigation leads Challis and Ellie to a small town in Santa Mira, California. When they arrive they check into a motel whose owner tells them a story. The motel owner tells them their good fortune is due to the Silver Shamrock Novelties Company, Which is owned by Conal Cochran (Dan O’Herlihy). This company makes these amazing Halloween masks that all the kids want. Challis finds out Grimbridge also stayed in the same motel. Challis and Ellie find the factory and makes the discovery that these men in suits are actually androids working for Cochran. Of course Challis and Ellie get caught and Cochran informs them of his plan to sacrifice all the children in the world to resurrect ancient witchcraft. All the masks that are being made contain a Silver Shamrock pin which contains a microchip. In those microchips have fragments of Stonehenge.
They have a commercial for the masks that draws kids in. When the kids put on their masks and the commercial starts, the horrors begin. It’s a race for Challis and Ellie to stop the madness and save the kids.
In my true opinion, this movie is down right amazing. I think if they would have just called this ‘Season Of The Witch’ and not added Halloween III in front of it, this movie would have done way better. The movie also has some brutal gory imagery. The scene with the kid watching the commercial and his head melts is one of the craziest things I have seen on film. The moment the bugs and snakes come out of the little child’s head is horrifying.
Tommy Lee Wallace did a great job coming up with the story. The imagery and the film looks fantastic even after all these years. This film now has become a cult classic and more and more people are starting to see how great it is. I think everyone should give this film a second chance. Go in with an open mind and enjoy this movie during Halloween. This movie is really a film about Halloween and the traditions of what it is really about.
Another thing I love about the movie is how they took the beat to ‘London Bridge is falling down’, and made it into their own creepy jingle. A jingle, when you hear it, makes all horror fans that love this movie sing along with it. “Happy, happy Halloween, Halloween, Halloween. Happy, happy Halloween, Silver Shamrock!” This film is a tradition I keep every year. When its near Halloween, I throw on ‘Season of The Witch’ and enjoy.
I give this film 4 1/2 Skulls out of 5. Again, go see this movie, it deserves more love then it gets. If you want a truly scary Halloween film, actually about Halloween, go check this film out. If you saw this years ago and don’t remember it, then pop it in your Blu-ray player and give it a another viewing.
Scream Factory actually put out a collectors edition recently that looks amazing! Just remember don’t buy your kids any masks from Silver Shamrock Novelties, The result might be deadly!
