The Great Wall Summary & Review

The Great Wall movie review

One of the many wonders of our world is The Great Wall of China. It spans over 21,000 feet across the country and was designed to keep China’s enemies out of their land. Even though it doesn’t completely enclose the country, it is long enough to give the impression that it does. Now it’s the subject of the new monster movie, The Great Wall.

Set around the Song dynasty in ancient China, two European merchants, William (Matt Damon) and Tavor (Pedro Pascal), are on the hunt for a special weapon when they come across The Great Wall of China. They are taken prisoner and soon discover that the warriors based there are fighting a race of alien monsters known as the Tao Tei. William becomes determined to help the soldiers, along side Commander Lin (Jing Tian), fight back against the creatures and protect the world from their wrath.

I didn’t think this movie looked that good from the trailers. Now that I have seen it, I was absolutely wrong. The Great Wall is a grade-A brainless monster movie. The action scenes were so fun, the sets and costumes were awesome, and Matt Damon’s performance, as always, was great. I don’t even care that it doesn’t fit into history, because it wasn’t trying to. It was just trying to be a monster movie set in ancient China.

I really enjoyed the Tao Tei’s design. For most of the trailers, they were kept hidden enough that you couldn’t tell what they looked like. I thought they had a really menacing and original design. I also really enjoyed that they had moments where you could feel bad for the monsters. In some scenes, when they were dragging their fallen comrades in retreat, I actually felt kind of sad. I thought that was really well done.

The thing that I loved the most about this movie were the 3D effects. We all know that 3D isn’t use well nowadays, but there is always at least one movie a year that manages to get it right. The Great Wall is 2017’s 3D movie to see. All the weapons being fired at the monsters were flying off the screen and it was glorious.

The Great Wall is one of the most entertaining movies of the year so far. The action scenes, visual effects, production and costume designs, and 3D effects were perfectly done. This movie should be the standard for all monsters movies of the future. This is how they should be made if you want to get the pure fun factor. Definitely try to see this movie in 3D. It is worth it.
