Two drowning men throw each other a lifeline in Tom Heard’s new romantic comedy GETTING IT. Jamie, a talented cabaret singer, is recovering from a breakup with his romantic and artistic partner. Ben is a young poet struggling with the death of his mother. When the two connect at a neighborhood party, the hardened souls begin to heal, but can people ever really change? Jamie (Tom Heard) is a former cabaret performer who now freelances as a writer for an arts and entertainment weekly in, Austin, where his best friend, Elaine (Sharron Bower) is the managing editor. When his boyfriend and pianist of five years, Patrick (Luke Hill) dumps him for a younger guy (between sets) Jamie is traumatized and vows never to sing publicly again. Instead, he performs for himself in his apartment imagining himself in more theatrical venues. Living next door to Jamie is Ben (Donato De Luca) a young poet who is staying with his brother (Jason Graf) and sister-in-law Alicia (Lesley Pedersen.) Ben is dealing with his own trauma after losing his mother to cancer. Ben was his mother’s caretaker and Luke resents his brother’s participation in helping their mother, who was in agony, end her life. Luke is unsympathetic to Ben’s conflicted emotions and depression and daily criticizes Ben’s stagnation. The complex’s apartment walls are paper thin and Jamie can hear the brother’s fights and Ben can hear Jamie singing songs he considers to be silly Broadway musical froth.
