Fifty Shades Darker Summary & Review
Two years ago, the worldwide best-selling novel, Fifty Shades of Grey, became a blockbuster movie, though it was pretty much panned by both critics and audiences. I saw it when it premiered on television later that year, and I have to say, it became a guilty-pleasure movie for me (don’t take that out of context). It is a bad movie, but I just couldn’t help enjoying it. Now, the second chapter in the trilogy is here, Fifty Shades Darker, a movie that has been met with similar critical disdain.
Taking place a few days after the first film, Anastasia Steele (Dakota Johnson) is trying to move past her experience as being a submissive to young billionaire Christian Grey (Jamie Dornan). However, when Christian promises that they can resume their relationship under Ana’s conditions, she decides to give him another chance. Their time together goes well, until the women of Christian’s past begin to target Ana, and they both learn that you can never really let go of who you are.
Let’s start with the bad. I have to admit that watching the “content” on a big screen in the middle of a public theater is a little awkward. This movie does seem like you would only watch on your own, with no one else around you. The sexual dialog is also pretty laughable. I found myself chuckling here and there at some of the things the characters are saying.
However, just like the first film, I couldn’t help but have fun with this one. I really felt for the characters and what they were doing. I enjoyed the performances from Johnson and Dornan. They try to act serious, but you can see that even they think you can’t take this movie seriously, which is enjoyable to watch. I also found some of the parts of the story actually pretty thrilling (NOT the sex scenes), and I was smiling at the end, so that’s a good sign.
In the end, Fifty Shades Darker was another fun bad movie that I just enjoyed all the way through. I really think people are too hard on melodramas. They’re not all made for girls to drag their boyfriends to. Some of them can be really good. This series has become a guilty-pleasure for me, and I can’t wait to see how it ends next year.
