Exciting new independent film available for review or for screening
The Last Straw, an original comedy, starring Henry Borriello and Jerry Murdock, and directed by Stolis Hadjicaharalambous, exemplifies the creativity of artists working entirely outside of the Hollywood system. Personally funded and produced, the movie demonstrates the youthful spirit that is often missing from the indie cinema scene. Hailed by indyred.com as “a fun time” and a “movie that I feel truly would feel at home with the films of the early 2000s,” The Last Straw promises to entertain audiences of all ages.
The Last Straw, a feature-length comedy, follows the character Bruce Bauer, a mild-mannered high schooler, whose great love is unjustly expelled from their chaotic public school for a minor infraction. Bruce bands together with a motley crew of accomplices—ranging from the toughest kids on campus to the nerdiest of hall monitors—in a rebellion against the school’s tyrannical disciples of Dean of Discipline Wolfgang Quint. They reimagine how to fight back; rather than resorting to violence they instead rain chaos and disorder throughout the school to drive Quint out. Their tactics range from the ridiculous—an in-school spitball bonanza—to the sublime, with hallways filled with traps and attacks of all sorts. The film takes a light-hearted look at the current high school scene, reminding viewers of just how silly it is to be a teenager. Rather than making light of the serious issues that occur on school campus, it shows the strength that is possible when students, of all types, stand together to fight for what is right.
The film has already been recognized by The Long Island Film Festival, The Fanboy Film Festival, and The Directors Chair Film Festival. It has also been screened as part of a charity initiative to help the homeless in New York City’s Lower East Side.
