Deadpool review

Okay here’s the sad truth that I think more comic book fanboys need to acknowledge; Deadpool as a comic-book character probably gets way more exposure than he deserves. Sure it’s pretty unique to have a comic-book character who for all intents and purposes is basically the Bugs Bunny of Marvel, but there’s really only so much you can do with him before he starts to get grating, and in the wrong hands he can be downright insufferable (If you need proof check out High Moon studios Deadpool video game from 2013, or at least google the cutscene’s).
I bring this up because I was legitimately concerned that Deadpool (the movie) was going to end up as another smug, self-righteous, annoying, dated, lazy movie so impressed with its own existance that they’d forget to actually make anything good out of it. Thankfully that’s not the case!
Deadpool is good, really good in fact, probably way better than it has any right to be, and probably has the entire comic-book movie community turning around and forgiving Fox for Fant4stic. It’s not exactly trying to be great or anything, I’m not sure I’ve seen a movie recently that was this absent in regards to deeper themes and morals, but for a movie basically serving as Fox’s big “Sorry we suck, here’s the stuff you actually want” piece it’s almost perfect.
It’s the best action comedy I’ve seen in a while, but maybe not for the reasons you think. What surprised me most was how the Valentines day release date was anything but an accident. Deadpool at its core really is a surprisingly good love story, and I honestly don’t wanna get into why it works so well because the less you know the better.
Suffice it too say it’s probably the only reason this movie works as well as it does; that and the fact that the writers and Ryan Reynolds really seem to get Deadpool as a character in a way I haven’t seen in a long time. Oh yeah speaking of which, Ryan, you’re forgiven for every bad movie you’ve ever done ever.
The rest of the cast is really great too, and I have a feeling everyone’s gonna be begging to have Negasonic Teenage Warhead added to the next couple X-men movies. Another thing I wasn’t expecting was for the CGI to be as good as it is. I was honestly on the fence about that from the trailers, but for the budget they had they really did a great job (probably because director Tim Miller is more of an effects man).
If there’s one real criticism I can lobby at Deadpool is that not every joke lands; there’s certainly a lot of intentional (I think) dated humor from Deadpool himself but there are some jokes that just legitimately aren’t funny. Still, I laughed more then I was expecting too so there’s that.
Bottom line, good job Fox, ya did good with this one, don’t screw up Cable.
