CUFF.Docs Lineup Announced: Local doc about Charles Manson to play Opening Night

Taking place November 16-19 at Globe Cinema, the fifth annual CUFF.Docs Festival announced 14 feature docs covering subjects as diverse as the problematic stereotypes with The Simpsons convenience store owner in THE PROBLEM WITH APU, to a look at the history of one of the most influential American punk bands in DON’T BREAK DOWN: A FILM ABOUT JAWBREAKER.
Presented by the Calgary Underground Film Festival, Calgary’s Documentary Festival celebrates the best in documentary filmmaking.
“We have a lot of fun curating this festival, looking for stories and subjects that we feel would connect with our audience, but also bring in new audiences,” said Festival Director and Programmer Brenda Lieberman. “There is such a wide range to choose from in this year’s selection, but all super interesting and great for conversation, or purely entertainment, whichever mood you are in.”
The opening night will feature two documentaries – CALIFORNIA TYPEWRITER focusing on the artists, writers, and collectors who remain steadfastly loyal to the typewriter and MANSON: THE VOICE OF MADNESS, a local production in which local Director Buddy Day spent a year interviewing Charles Manson and tracking down members of the Manson Family. Narrated by Rob Zombie and created by the Calgary-based production team behind the recent award-winner LIVING PROOF, Buddy Day will be in attendance for a Q&A following the screening.
Local Director Ramin Eshraghi-Yazdi will also be attending the festival. His latest film NAME looks at how a ones given name shapes the world around us, featuring the Calgary-based star of the CBC-hit Kim’s Convenience Andrew Phung.
Other filmmakers in attendance include Andrew Austin who chronicles the history and legacy of the Nintendo controller in POWER GLOVE and Mark Christopher Covino’s THE CREST, an Irish surf documentary.
