CGI Over Plot – Spectral Film Review
Firstly, I have to send gratitude to Graham and the Movie Blogger team for their warm welcome. I am honored, happy and a bit scared.
It is, of course, a great deal to be granted such a possibility to share my thoughts on different movie titles with the vast world of movie lovers.
I did not know how to start, or better, which movie to choose for my first review on Movie Blogger. The complication led by my sadistic unconscious made me realize, I should just ‘go for it’, and I chose a Netflix (not that new) production with the title Spectral.
We’re following a situation of civil unrest somewhere, I guess, eastern Europe. The US Army (Special forces) fights the rebels, however the same saving party meets a much tougher opponent – invisible beings, who/which cause instant death to anyone fighting against them. Some of the locals call them Spirits of war, however it seems more like a result of a scientific experiment made by the fallen government.
The premise is quite catchy, the whole idea of a special ops team fighting spirits in a dystopian future gives you the chills. And the story-line leads you fairly through some interesting moments, with the addition of great CGI and action inserts, therefore making viewer is certain to watch a perhaps and almost high quality sci-fi action thriller. And he or she it’s in the wrong.
It might be a well produced feature (from the visual effects point of view) and, as previously mentioned, the plot has some potential, but the delivery is above average.
I can’t accept the usual American shallow approach to (Eastern) European nations, then the story-line is mostly adapted to the action sequences. Seems they put all the effort and inspiration in the promotion scheme and CGI, which unfortunately didn’t help much the already petty story-line and characters. Spectral became just one more option in the Netflix table of content.
