‘Canned Laughter’ puppetry film launches on Kickstarter
‘Canned Laughter’, a short comedy film using a mix of puppetry and live-action, has launched a Kickstarter campaign to help fund its production.
Written and directed by Chris Brake, and produced by Ryan Bennett, ‘Canned Laughter’ tells the story of Deirdre Gossamer, a retired comedian who has knitted herself an audience in lieu of performing to a real one. But when one of her home-made punters comes to life and destroys her career memorabilia, she’s forced to re-think her attachment to the ‘glory days’ and face the once unthinkable prospect of moving on…
Director Chris Brake explained “it’s a story about clinging on instead of moving on. A lot of it is based on my own nostalgia for the comedy career I was working towards in my early twenties, and the temptation to look back on it with rose-tinted glasses. The character of Deirdre Gossamer just takes her wallowing to the extreme, making a comedy club in the basement of her home, filling it with a hand-crafted audience and reciting the same routine over and over again.”
Brake is reuniting with puppeteer Oliver James Hymans to bring the character of ‘The Heckler’ to life, following the success they had collaborating on an earlier short film ‘Scraps’. Brake noted “we had such a great response to the last film that we worked on together, and on a film like this puppetry gives you so much freedom to design characters that are more symbolic or allegorical in how they relate the story to us. We’re running a Kickstarter campaign to try and raise enough budget to ensure the puppet and production design are of the highest standard that’s needed to make Deirdre’s unusual world believable.”
The Kickstarter campaign launched April 19th and runs until May 18th 2021, with a goal of raising £5000:
