Café Society Summary & Review
I have not seen a lot from director Woody Allen. I only know that he is probably one of the hardest working filmmakers in the industry today. The guy is in his early 80s, and he still manages to make at least one movie a year, and he has been doing that for several decades. He truly is a filmmaker that will not stop making movies until the day he dies. Now, we have his latest film, Café Society. This film takes place in Los Angeles and New York City during the 1930s. It follows Bobby (Jessie Eisenberg), a man who is looking to make a name for himself among the stars. Once in Los Angeles, he has many adventures while working for his uncle Phil Stern (Steve Carell), a powerful Hollywood agent, and starting a romance with Vonnie (Kristen Stewart), Phil’s secretary. So, how does this Woody Allen film hold up?
What I liked about it:
– It was very funny. I have only seen one other film from Woody Allen, but I know he has a good eye for comedy.
– The performances from Eisenberg, Carell, and Stewart were great. I could tell they were really getting into their roles as 1930s Hollywood people.
– The production and costume designs were great. Everything really did look like that era.
– The cinematography was great. It was very colorful and pretty to look at.
What I didn’t like about it:
– I feel like it dragged on towards the end. It had many parts where it felt and looked like it was going to end, and then we would go into something else.
– I didn’t get a lot of the references to 1930s cinema, but I don’t know a lot about that time.
Conclusion:
Café Society was a very enjoyable movie. It had lots of fun moments that kept the movie interesting, and lots of laughs. While I do think that the ending could have been better paced, I still enjoyed the film. I really have to check out more of Woody Allen’s films. I’ve only seen two now, and he has a lot of great movies under his belt. Overall, I recommend this movie to die hard movie lovers who know about the era.
