Two Cents:

Not the best Marvel movie ever made, but by far the most successful Thor film to date. Ragnarok blasts into theaters with a decidedly Guardians of the Galaxy-esk feel about it. It blends mythical Norse mythology with a healthy dose of humor, never takes itself too seriously (perhaps not seriously enough sometimes), and finally gives the Hulk something more to do other than smash.

MVPs in Ragnarok? Easily Kate Blanchett as the Goddess of Death, Hela, and Mark Ruffalo as the Hulk. The rest of the cast does decent work, and director Taika Waititi, manages to balance the humor and drama to create somewhat credible stakes, while also jumping on every opportunity to give the audience a laugh. Not all the jokes worked, and many were spoiled by the trailers, but on the whole, I’d say this is exactly the kind of spectacle entertainment we want from a comic book film. It’s colorful, loud, funny, and most importantly, entertaining. See this on a nice big screen.

Movie Prep:

This is a big shift in pace and tone from the earlier Thor movies, but if you were entertained by the Guardians of the Galaxy, I think you’ll enjoy this.

Best Moment:

It’s in the trailer. When Thor finds out he’ll be battling Hulk in the arena.

“He’s a friend from work!”
