REAL LIFE STORIES

CIFF 2017

Today the Calgary International Film Festival announced 18 documentaries that will be screening at this year’s festival, including music docs from our popular Music on Screen Series.

“Personal stories are at the heart of this year’s program,” said Alex Rogalski, Documentary Programmer at the Calgary International Film Festival. “Dreamers, poets and fireworks will connect viewers to a world that can at first seem fractured and divided, but these passionate documentaries provide a way to bring us closer together.”

Films that get up close and personal include LIVING PROOF, in which director and Calgary filmmaker Matt Embry meets fellow sufferers of multiple sclerosis and investigates treatment options, questioning Big Pharma along the way. The film will have its world premiere at TIFF a few weeks before coming to Calgary. In SHUT UP AND SAY SOMETHING, spoken word poetry icon Shake Koyczan reconciles with his estranged father, in an odyssey directed by Vancouver-based filmmaker Melanie Wood.

Musical high notes include STRAD STYLE, the story of a self-described “nobody” who promises to create a legendary classical violin in just a few months. Directed by Stefan Avalos, it has garnered awards from festivals including Slamdance and Hot Docs. Meanwhile, Calgary director Todd Kipp takes a look back at Liverpool’s vibrant music scene in the 1960s in SOME OTHER GUYS, with some filming taking place in Canmore.

This year’s documentary topics range from the refugee crisis (Ai Weiwei’s HUMAN FLOW, 69 MINUTES OF 86 DAYS and THE WORKERS CUP) to the environmental (THE LAST ONES) and political (PACMAN), to the highly entertaining and crowd-pleasing (REBELS ON POINTE).

Many of the films will be accompanied by their directors and other notable guests. Please see the list of guests below, and the full list of 18 documentaries at calgaryfilm.com.
